Fortune compares Stripe's recent acquisitions to early Google
Fortune's Term Sheet newsletter compared Stripe's acquisitions since late 2024 with Google's buying from 2003 to 2007, which included DoubleClick, AdSense, the company behind Google Earth, Android, and YouTube. Finance editor Jeff John Roberts, filling in as the newsletter's writer, listed Privy and Bridge (wallets and stablecoins), Orum (account verification and bank transfers), and Metronome (usage-based billing), and wrote that Stripe had closed a deal worth around $7.5 billion for OpenRouter. He also wrote that a PayPal bid made that spring fell apart after PayPal's share price rose and a $60.50 offer looked cheap. James Wester of Javelin Strategies said the miss may be for the best on cultural fit, and noted that Stripe is still private, unlike Google after its 2004 IPO. The column did not announce a new Stripe transaction.
